Micro-Needling

What is Micro-Needling?
Micro-needling is a non-laser, skin resurfacing option for treating fine lines and wrinkles, scarring (especially acne scars), large pores, and skin texture issues.

It is performed in our office by our esthetician. She uses the Skin Pen, a handheld device with 12 needles that puncture the skin thousands of times to create tiny micro injuries. This creates a controlled wound that forces the skin to produce new collagen and repair itself.

Micro-needling is great for all skin types (there is no heat involved, making it safer for dark skin), and it works well on all parts of the body.

How does Micro-needling compare to laser skin resurfacing?
Micro needling can be compared to non-ablative lasers. The needles do penetrate as deep as these lasers can go. However, because there is no heat or light involved, the results may be less dramatic.

How many treatments will I need?
For most patients, we recommend a series of 3 sessions, spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Some skin conditions may require 5-6 sessions.

What can I expect during my treatment?
The process starts at home, where you apply a topical numbing cream that we have prescribed for you, approximately 45 to 60 minutes before treatment. At our office, the nurse will remove the numbing cream moments before the procedure. Finally, the treatment begins and takes between 30 – 40 minutes.

What about after treatment?
Immediately after treatment, skin will be extremely red. In the days that follow, patients will experience dry, tight, slight redness, maybe even a small amount of peeling. Within the course of a week, the skin will heal and continue to improve by filling in collagen over the next month or so.
